Match report

Dungannon Swifts moved to within four points of the top spot after beating Limerick United 2-0 in the Premiership's fifth regular season round on 5 September. The visitors had already won four of their five games, while the hosts had lost all four of theirs. Swifts kept their unbeaten run intact and extended a streak of three consecutive wins. Limerick United's winless start continued without change.

L. Alves opened the scoring in the thirtieth minute, slotting home a chance that caught the home defence flat-footed. The goal shifted the momentum, and Swifts began to control the tempo. They pressed higher up the pitch, forcing Limerick United into mistakes in their own half. By then the home side had already thrown bodies in the way to stem the flow.

T. Kelly doubled the advantage in the sixty-eighth minute, finishing a move that had been building since the break. Swifts had worked a short corner to create space, and the delivery found Kelly unmarked in the box. Limerick United were reduced to watching from behind, their defensive structure crumbling under sustained pressure. The visitors added a second yellow card in quick succession after the goal, but the result was never in doubt.

Swifts dominated possession with 56 per cent and registered seven shots on target compared to three for the hosts. They also had more attacks, 116 to 99, and won eight corners against five. Yet the statistics tell only part of the story — the match was decided by two moments that Limerick United could not recover from. Shots off target were level at four apiece, but the difference lay in clinical finishing.

The result leaves Dungannon Swifts in second place with twelve points from five games, one loss and no draws to their name. Limerick United remain bottom of the table with zero points from four defeats. The gap between the two sides has widened to twelve points, a chasm that would take a remarkable turnaround to bridge. Swifts now hold their position in the upper half, while the hosts continue their search for a first point of the season.
