Match report

Nagoya Grampus fell to a narrow defeat against Shimizu S-Palms in the opening round of the J-League 1 Regular Season. The match, played on 8 August 2026, ended 0-1 thanks to a single goal from K. Kitagawa of the visiting side. It was a result that reflected Shimizu's efficiency rather than dominance, and here's the thing — they didn't need much to take all three points.

K. Kitagawa broke the deadlock in the 38th minute, capitalising on one of Shimizu's rare opportunities. The visitors had barely 25 per cent of possession but made their chances count. Nagoya, by then, were pressing forward with conviction but couldn't find the breakthrough they deserved.

The game shifted dramatically in the 61st minute when Shimizu's Oh Se-Hun received a red card after collecting two yellows in quick succession. Nagoya now had a numerical advantage, but Shimizu's defence held firm. By then, the visitors had already set up shop with five clearances and five interceptions to keep the home side at bay.

Nagoya made several changes in search of an equaliser. R. Izumi came on in the 61st minute, followed by Mateus at 70. K. Kitagawa and Y. Nogami were substituted together in the 76th minute, while Y. Honda and Diego came on later in the contest. Shimizu's Park Seung-Wook picked up a yellow card in the 85th minute as the visitors looked to see out the final minutes.

The statistics painted a picture of Nagoya's frustration. They enjoyed 75 per cent possession and registered 14 shots, yet created zero big chances. Shimizu, with just 25 per cent of the ball, managed one big chance and converted it. Both sides had six shots on target, but Shimizu's accuracy was 43 per cent compared to Nagoya's 33 per cent.

So what does this mean for both clubs? Nagoya sit 14th in the table with six points from six games, while Shimizu remain in 17th place with four points. The result doesn't dramatically alter either team's position, but it shows that even the underdogs can take points when the opportunity presents itself. To be fair, Nagoya will feel they deserved more from a game where they dominated possession but couldn't find the cutting edge.
