Skalica FC secured a 2-1 victory over Ružomberok in the Superliga's Regular Season round two on Saturday. The hosts took all three points at home, moving from eighth place into a more comfortable position in the table. To be fair, the result barely reflected the flow of the opening half, where Ružomberok pressed high and Skalica answered with direct passes into the final third.
Peter Onyedika opened the scoring in the thirteenth minute, capitalising on a moment of space in the penalty area. He doubled his tally six minutes later, and here's the thing — the second goal came from the same pattern of play. Ružomberok pulled one back through Ján Hladik in the twenty-ninth, but by then Skalica had already set the tone for the rest of the match.
The disciplinary side of things turned sharply after the interval. Denis Baris collected his second yellow in the seventy-ninth minute and saw red, leaving Ružomberok to finish with ten men. Onyedika also went off with a booking in the eighty-sixth, while Dávid Kostl and Tomáš Marusin picked up yellows earlier in the contest. Skalica made six substitutions across the second half, bringing on O. Luteran, M. Koubek, A. Ravas, E. Daniel, V. Hranos and P. Pudhorocky in sequence.
Onyedika's two goals masked a statistical imbalance. Skalica registered seven shots on target with fifty-eight per cent accuracy, while Ružomberok managed only four on target despite more attacks overall. The visitors created two big chances against three for the hosts, but the conversion rate told its own story. Possession split 56-44 in Skalica's favour, with both sides completing roughly the same number of long passes.
The victory extended Skalica's recent form, following a 1-1 draw with Spartak Trnava and a 3-1 win over Slovácko. Ružomberok's run of results has been less consistent, with draws against Dunajská Streda and Fortuna Düsseldorf sandwiching heavy defeats to Teplice and Slavia Prague. They remain at the foot of the table with just two points from seven games.
Skalica's eight points from seven matches put them in a more stable position, while Ružomberok's two points left them twelfth. The goal difference tells a similar story — Skalica have scored more than they've conceded, whereas the visitors have struggled to find the net. What matters most is that Skalica held their nerve after the red card, and Ružomberok could not find an equaliser with the extra man they had been playing with for most of the second half.
