Match report

Viking Hold on for Late Winner Against Aalesund

Viking ground out a 2:1 victory over Aalesund in the Eliteserien, Regular Season round 19 at SR-Bank Arena on Sunday afternoon. The hosts took the lead early through U. Charles, who headed home in the fourth minute, and despite Aalesund pulling level through S. Kvia-Egeskog in the 73rd, Viking snatched it at the death with a goal in stoppage time. By then the result was already shifting the table in favour of the home side.

The opening goal came quickly, and Viking kept their noses in front for most of the contest, though Aalesund were not without their moments. The visitors had a yellow card to show for M. Christensen in the 33rd minute and another for O. Gudmundsson shortly after, while Viking's H. Hammer was brought off just before half-time. Aalesund tried to push for an equaliser but Viking's shape held firm, and they changed the shape at half-time to manage the game better.

What stood out was the disparity in chance creation. Viking registered 18 shots with six on target and created two big chances, while Aalesund mustered only nine efforts with four on target and failed to create a single clear opportunity. The visitors kept possession for a third of the game and crossed the ball 17 times, but only three landed with any accuracy. To be fair, Aalesund made 49 clearances, which tells you something about the pressure they were under.

Viking brought on A. Cosic and J. Bell together in the 62nd minute, then H. J. Haugen came on for H. J. Haugen in the 71st, suggesting the coaching staff wanted fresh legs to see out the game. Aalesund responded with three changes in quick succession — E. Osenbroch, V. Auklend and T. Moi — but the effort came too late, and Viking held on despite a yellow card for D. Johannsson in the 85th minute.

The statistics tell the story of one team dominating territory and another surviving on clearance and counter. Viking completed 343 of 439 passes, while Aalesund managed 286 from 372. The visitors had more aerial duels (39 to 37) and more tackles (11 to 10), but those numbers mean little when you look at the big chances created and the shots on target.

The result keeps Viking in second place with 40 points from 17 matches, three wins clear of third, while Aalesund remain 15th with 15 points. The gap between them is now 25 points, and the visitors have only two victories all season. Viking's recent form has been strong — three wins and a draw in their last five — while Aalesund's results have been erratic, including a 13-0 win over Lангваг and a 5-5 draw with Валлеренга.

What this match will go down as is a game Viking controlled but did not finish off until the final whistle. They had the chances, they had the possession, and in the end they had the result. Aalesund will need to find a way to turn draws into wins if they are to climb out of the relegation zone, but for now the table tells them they are still a long way from safety.
