About the player
Haoyang Yao was still a teenager when he first pulled on gloves for Hubei Istar, making his professional debut in 2023 at just 16 in what would become an 11-appearance introduction to senior football. The Dalian-born goalkeeper's path since then has run almost entirely through loan spells, each one raising his profile.
The most productive came in early 2024, when Hubei Istar sent him to Yunnan Yukun. Yao took over as starting goalkeeper and made 28 appearances in China League One as the club won the championship and earned promotion to the Chinese Super League. A year later, in January 2025, he moved on loan again, this time to Chongqing Tonglianglong. He was first choice there throughout the 2025 China League One campaign, playing 17 matches as Chongqing finished runners-up behind champions Liaoning Tieren and went up to the Chinese Super League themselves.
That loan turned permanent in January 2026, when Chongqing Tonglianglong signed him outright from Hubei Istar. He has kept the number one shirt in the Chinese Super League this season, recording six clean sheets in 15 appearances so far.
Yao has also featured for the China under-23 national team in friendly matches. Standing 195cm tall, he has built a reputation as a goalkeeper trusted to start rather than deputise.
