ADT returned to Peru's top flight in 2021, after 31 years away, and by 2024 had gone further than the club ever had: a preliminary-round tie in the Copa Sudamericana. That climb back started in Tarma, a town in the Junín department, where the club has played as Estadio Unión Tarma, a ground holding 9,100.

The team was founded on 18 June 1929 as Alianza Tarma, taking its current name only in 1960. Locally it is El Vendaval Celeste, the sky-blue squall.

The Copa Perú has been the club's route to the top division twice over, and both times a coach named José Chacaltana was on the bench. In 1979, when ADT won the competition for the first time and earned a first-ever place in the Primera División, Chacaltana was in goal and doubled as manager, a dual role that earned him the nickname "the Menotti of the Andes." Luis "Camachito" Camacho scored the goal that sealed it. ADT made the most of that debut season, finishing third in the 1980 Liguilla Final behind only Atlético Torino and Alianza Lima.
