Albirex Niigata

The team that became Albirex Niigata began in 1955 as Niigata Eleven SC, an amateur side that won the Hokushinetsu Football League three times before the professional era caught up with it. The push to turn professional brought a new name in 1995, Albireo Niigata FC, and then a second one two years later after a trademark conflict over "Albireo". What replaced it was built from Latin — albus for white, rex for king — while keeping the link to the star Albireo in Cygnus, the Swan.

Supporters call the side the White Swans, and since 2004 the club has played at the Denka Big Swan Stadium, opened in 2001 and holding 41,684. Before that the home was the Niigata City Athletic Stadium. The orange in the shirts is taken from the Niigata sunset, the blue from the Sea of Japan.

Niigata entered the Japan Football League in 1998 and joined the new J2 League a year later. The Emperor's Cup has never gone past the quarter-finals, and the 2023 run also ended on penalties, against Kawasaki Frontale.

Edmilson remains the club's leading scorer in J.League matches with 62 goals; Isao Homma holds the appearance record.
