Nacional go into the current Categoría Primera A season as the club that has never had to ask what the top flight looks like from below.

That continental identity dates to 1989, when a Nacional side built around Francisco Maturana beat Olimpia on penalties to become the first Colombian club to win the Copa Libertadores. René Higuita played in goal that year, and the same generation carried a defender named Andrés Escobar. Nacional went on to lose the Intercontinental Cup final to Milan by a single goal, then waited until 2016 to win the Libertadores again, beating River Plate on penalties under Reinaldo Rueda before finishing third at the Club World Cup.

The club was formed in Medellín on 7 March 1947 as Club Atlético Municipal, notarised three weeks later, and only became Atlético Nacional in July 1950 after the textile firm Fabricato bought a controlling stake and pushed the name to reflect a squad fielding Colombians only. Fabricato sold up within a year; the current majority owner, Organización Ardila Lülle, bought in during 1996.
