Čelik have spent recent seasons in the Bosnian Premijer Liga, a spell that still anchors the club's reputation in Zenica more than any single result since. The city, built around its steel plant, gave the club its name — Čelik means steel — and its identity has stayed tied to the works ever since founding by war veterans on 16 June 1945.

The name itself did not stay put. Within a decade the club became FK Zenica, then in 1959 merged with a separate local side, FK Željezničar Zenica, to form FK Radnički, before reverting to Čelik shortly after — the version that has carried the club since. That title run under Nermin Hadžiahmetović between 1992 and 1996, three championships and two domestic cups, remains the reference point for anyone in Zenica talking about the club's best years. Two decades earlier, under Marcel Žigante, Čelik had already put its name on European honours boards, lifting the Mitropa Cup in 1971 and the Intertoto Cup in 1975 — rare continental silverware for a club from what was then Yugoslavia's second tier of football cities.

Bilino Polje, the home ground since those years, holds 13,694 and has hosted Bosnia's national team as well as the club itself. The academy has sent players well beyond the country: Elvir Bolić moved through Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe after starting out at Čelik, while Mladen Krstajić went on to Werder Bremen and Schalke. Neither man is remembered in Zenica for what came after, though — it is the black-and-red shirts of the 1990s side that supporters, nicknamed themselves the Robijaši, still measure the club against.

No fixture carries more weight locally than the one against Željezničar Sarajevo, a rivalry sharpened by the shared name history in Zenica itself and by decades of meetings between the two clubs for supremacy in Bosnian football.
