Chornomorets

In the spring of 1992, with the Soviet league structure gone and a Ukrainian championship being assembled from its pieces, Chornomorets won the first Ukrainian Cup ever contested. Two years later they won it again. Those two trophies sit either side of a period when the Odesa club was, briefly, runners-up in the Premier League in 1994/95 and again the following season, with third-place finishes on either side of that run.

The club that won them had been assembled long before, under a different name and a different flag. It started in 1936 as Dynamo Odesa, a works-and-society side like dozens of others, and only took the name Chornomorets in 1958. The black and blue arrived at the same time — blue for the sky, black for the earth — and stuck.

The Soviet decades gave them promotions rather than titles: first-tier runners-up in 1962, third in 1974, and three First League championships spread across 1961, 1973 and 1987. The last Soviet-era trophy came in 1990, the Football Union Cup.

European football has been intermittent. Four UEFA Cup campaigns from 1975/76 onwards, three in the Cup Winners' Cup during the mid-1990s while the domestic cup wins were still fresh, then a long gap before the Europa League appearances of 2013/14 and 2014/15. In between came a run to the 2007 Intertoto Cup.

The most recent domestic final was 2012/13, lost.
