Guairena FC

Troadio Duarte took over Guaireña FC in 2018 and stayed four years, long enough to turn a club still finding its feet into one that reached the top flight of Paraguayan football. He led the side to the 2019 División Intermedia title, the result that sent Guaireña into the Primera División for the first time, then returned to the bench partway through that debut season after Mario Jacquet had opened it.

The club exists because Villarrica, the seat of the Guairá department, wanted a professional side of its own. The Paraguayan Football Association backed the idea in 2016, and the region's amateur federation, Liga Guaireña de Fútbol, supplied the platform: it had just won the Campeonato Nacional de Interligas, a result that carried the right to found a professional club and enter the Second Division. Doctor Luis Cáceres pushed the project through and became its first president. The regional league itself had lifted that same interleague title four times before, going back to 1938, but Guaireña counts only the 2016 win as its own — the earlier ones belong to a competition, not to a club that did not yet exist.

Guaireña play as El Albiceleste, in sky blue, white and black, out of the Estadio Parque del Guairá in Villarrica, which holds 12,000. Two Copa Sudamericana campaigns followed the promotion: a sixth-place finish in 2021, then a group stage in 2022 where they finished second behind Internacional and advanced. Domestically, the Copa Paraguay has produced three quarter-finals — 2019, 2021 and 2024 — without a further step; Olimpia beat them there in 2021, Sportivo Luqueño in 2024. Sportivo Ameliano has become the fixture opposing fans circle, a rivalry the local press calls a pareja lid without ever giving it a proper derby name.

Roberto "Tiburón" Torres took the coaching job at the end of 2022 and remains the man tasked with keeping Guaireña in the division it fought five years to reach.
