KA Akureyri

Greifavöllurinn holds 1,645 people. When KA Akureyri and Þór Akureyri meet there, the derby fills it.

That rivalry is older and stranger than the fixture list suggests. In 1928, the year KA came into being, the two clubs merged into a single sporting body, ÍBA Akureyri, and from 1944 to 1974 they sent one combined side into the top division rather than two. Everything KA won in that period, it won under the joint banner: four Icelandic championships, in 1968 and then three years running from 1970, and two cups.

The merger was dissolved in 1974 and KA went back to standing on its own. The next fifty years produced two cup finals and two defeats, in 1989 and 2013, before the 2024 final against Víkingur, where Viðar Örn Kjartansson scored the goal that settled it.

Þorvaldur Örlygsson is the name that carries furthest. He played for KA from 1984 to 1989 and was voted Iceland's best player in his final season of that first spell, then came back in 2000 for three more years. More recently Nökkvi Þeyr Þórisson scored 17 goals on his way to being named the league's best player in 2022.

The yellow shirts and blue shorts have been there throughout, on a club that spent thirty of its first fifty years not quite being itself.
