«Zelvia»
In November 2025, at the Japan National Stadium, a club beat Vissel Kobe 3–1 to take the Emperor's Cup.
The name came out of a municipal filing cabinet. Machida City lists an official tree, the zelkova, and an official flower, the salvia; in 2009 the club fused the two into Zelvia. Promotion to J2 arrived in 2011 and lasted a single season — the club went straight back down.
What turned it was Go Kuroda, who came to the job from high school football rather than from the professional game. Under him Machida won the J2 League in 2023 and reached J1 for the first time, then finished third in the top flight in their debut season.
Erik, the Brazilian, scored 18 in that promotion season and finished as J2's leading marksman.
