José Varela, one of the founders, settled the club's colours by looking at a cart. It was hauling bales of grass to the slaughterhouses of Mataderos, painted green and black, and the shirts were ordered from Perretti's shop in vertical stripes. That was 1911, in a district on the western edge of Buenos Aires that lived off cattle and took its nickname from the American city that did the same work — which is where the club got its name, and where Nueva Chicago got its own: the Torito de Mataderos, the little bull.

The title that still matters came on 24 December 1933, at Almagro's ground, when Chicago beat Banfield 1–0 to take the Copa Competencia Jockey Club. It remains the club's only official trophy won in the top flight. That same year they finished second in the Primera División, and they had done it once before, in 1925.

Everything since has been about going up and coming back down. Six promotions to the top division — 1919, 1930, 1981, 2001, 2006, 2014 — and no long stay after any of them. The record the club actually holds is for endurance rather than success: 79 seasons in the second division, and 47 in the old Primera B.

The ground is the Estadio Nueva Chicago, often called the República de Mataderos after one of its stands. The Spanish figure for capacity is 17,266, though the licence permits only 15,000 through the turnstiles.

The 2014 Primera B Metropolitana title put them back into the second tier. What the trophy cabinet still lacks is anything won abroad, anything from the Copa Argentina, and a league championship of any kind in the Primera División.
