The club dates to 1924, when it was founded as SK AŠ Ajdovščina. That NK Primorje reached the final of the Slovenian Cup three years running, in 1995/96, 1996/97 and 1997/98, and lost all three. SNL title in 2009/10, which sent it back up to the top division.
NK Primorje folded in May 2011, unable to clear its debts. Within a month a youth academy, DNŠ Ajdovščina, was set up on the same ground to keep football running in the town. It merged with ŠD Škou in 2018 and took the name ND Primorje, formally continuing the old club's history.
