Founded in 1919, it passed through Sokol, then Baník under the mining designation of the 1950s, then simply TJ MŽ, before a kitchen-equipment manufacturer, Sigma, put its name on the shirt in 1966. A Communist-era rebrand to ZTS followed in 1979, and only after the Velvet Revolution in 1990 did the club drift back toward something like its own identity, dropping the factory reference altogether by 1996 to settle on SK Sigma Olomouc.

Sigma's best league finish remains second place, in the 1995–96 season. In Europe the club got as far as the last eight of the UEFA Cup in 1991–92 and reached the final of the Intertoto Cup in 2000.
