SK Vorwarts Steyr

Home games in Steyr are played at the Vorwärts-Stadion.

The club was founded on 14 April 1919 as Steyrer Fußballklub Vorwärts, taking up the red and white it has worn ever since. The 20th century tested that name more than once. Political repression forced a dissolution in 1934, and the side returned the following year as Österreichischer Sportklub Steyr before reclaiming SK Vorwärts by the summer of 1935. In 1944, short of players, it merged with local rival Amateure Steyr to form Fußballgemeinschaft Steyr, an arrangement that held only until the year's end. Independence, and the old name, came back in 1945.

A financial collapse at the turn of the millennium proved harder to undo through a merger. The licence was withdrawn in January 2000, and by August 2001 Vorwärts was starting again in the 2. Klasse.

That elite place had brought a best finish of seventh, in 1990/91 and again in 1991/92, across 13 seasons in the Bundesliga, and a run to the 1949 Cup final, lost 2-5 to Austria Vienna. The 2. Liga title of 1997/98 sent the club back up; the Regionalliga title of 2017/18 marked another climb from further down. In 1995, Vorwärts won its Intertoto Cup group unbeaten, beating Eintracht Frankfurt 2-1 along the way, before an away defeat to Rennes closed the route to the UEFA Cup.
