Nineteen Tasmanian state championships have gone to South Hobart, and the two blocks of them sit either side of a long gap. The first run came almost without a break: 1919, 1920, 1921, 1922, 1923, then again at the end of the decade. The last of the old titles arrived in 1959, and the club then went almost half a century without another, pushed down the table by the ethnic-based clubs that grew through the 1960s. The state championship did not return until 2002.

What followed was a different kind of dominance. In 2010 the club took every major Tasmanian trophy available in a single season and held the lot in 2011. When Football Federation Australia restructured the state competitions, South Hobart won the inaugural NPL Tasmania title in 2013 and went on to the national playoff Grand Final. In 2014 it became the first Tasmanian side to reach the FFA Cup proper. The premierships of 2025 and 2026 carried the club into the first Australian Championship.

Kostas Kanakaris scored three goals in 2 minutes 51 seconds against Launceston City in May 2013 — the fastest hat-trick recorded in Australian football. Andy Brennan came through the club in three separate spells between 2010 and 2020 and later became the first openly gay male professional footballer in Australia.

The ground sits on D'Arcy Street at the foot of Mount Wellington. The club took its nickname, the Saints, from the red and white it has always worn and from the Anglican parish of All Saints next door.

Founded in 1910 and the oldest surviving football club in Tasmania, South Hobart has beaten everything the state has to offer and nothing beyond it. The 2013 Grand Final remains the closest it has come to a national title, and Glenorchy Knights keep knocking on the door at home.
