Founded on 7 August 1924, Universitario built its identity around the cream and maroon shirt and the nickname La U, though supporters just as often call the side Los Cremas. What separates the club from the rest of Peruvian football is not any single trophy but the accumulation: 29 league championships, stretching from a first title in 1929 through three straight — 2023, 2024 and 2025.
The closest the club came to continental silverware was in 1972, when it reached the final of the Copa Libertadores and lost. Domestically, the rivalry that defines the calendar is the Superclásico against Alianza Lima, a fixture that outweighs league position whenever it comes around; Sporting Cristal supplies the other fixture Lima takes seriously.
On matchday the Monumental fills toward capacity for the visits that matter, and for a club with no ground of comparable size anywhere else in the country, that is where its history is actually measured.
