Zenit is barely three years old under that name. The club was built in 2022 on the foundation of Neva, a Saint Petersburg side that had carried the city's handball tradition since 1964 and taken the very first Russian Championship in 1992/93.
For over three decades after that first title, Saint Petersburg went without another one. Zenit ended that run in the 2024/25 season, beating CSKA 27:23 at home in the deciding match of the Superliga — the same season the club also topped the East Division of the SEHA-Gazprom League.
The team plays out of the Yubileyny Sports Palace, and captain Dmitry Kiselyov leads a squad built around goalkeepers Dmitry Kuznetsov and Ivan Sharov.
Thirty-two years passed between Saint Petersburg's first Russian Championship and its second.
