About the player
Diego Manuel Hernández González came through the youth ranks at Montevideo Wanderers, and it was there, over three seasons and 83 league appearances, that he built the profile that took him abroad: a left-footed forward comfortable drifting to the left wing. He reached a domestic final with Wanderers early on, finishing runner-up in the 2021 Supercopa Uruguaya, a 2–0 defeat to Nacional.
His move to Botafogo in July 2023 was the turning point of his career, a transfer worth around US$2.2–2.5 million for a majority stake in his economic rights. With only 17 appearances and a single goal for the Brazilian club, he spent the following seasons out on loan rather than establishing himself in Rio de Janeiro. He tried his luck at Club León in Mexico, then at Everton de Viña del Mar in Chile.
Across 33 appearances he scored four goals and set up three more, numbers that made him a contributor to Remo's promotion to Série A. Sport Recife moved for him in July 2026, taking over his salary in a deal expected to become permanent.
On the international stage, Hernández represented Uruguay's under-23 side at the Pan American Games in 2023, and the same year earned a call-up to the senior national team.
