The one league title Dundee United hold came in the 1982/83 season, the peak of a run built under Jim McLean, who took charge in 1971 and stayed for 22 years. That side did not stop at the domestic table: it reached the semi-final of the European Cup in 1984 and the final of the UEFA Cup in 1986/87. Two League Cups arrived earlier in that period, beating Aberdeen in 1979/80.

The club started life in 1909 as Dundee Hibernian, a name aimed at the city's Irish Catholic community. It did not hold; in October 1923, with the books not balancing, the board renamed it Dundee United to widen the fanbase beyond one community. Tannadice Park, still home now, holds 14,223.

The Scottish Cup has come to Tannadice twice: in 1994, when Rangers were beaten in the final, and again in 2010 against Ross County. Between those two dates and since, the club has gone up through the Second Division and Championship four times — 1924/25, 1928/29, 2019/20 and 2023/24. The Hall of Fame, running since 2008, keeps McLean's name alongside Gerry Kerr, Paul Sturrock and Maurice Malpas.

Across the city sits Dundee, the other half of the Dundee Derby.
