The Norwegian Men's Volleyball Eliteserien sits at the summit of the national pyramid, operating as the country's premier club competition. Organized by the Norwegian Volleyball Federation, the tournament traces its origins to 1973, when the inaugural season took place. While the governing body dates back to 1946, the league structure has evolved significantly since those early days. The competition currently features nine clubs, including established names such as Førde, Koll, NTNUI, Oksil, OSI, and Randaberg. A unique element is the inclusion of a development side, ToppVolley Norge, which participates in the regular schedule but remains excluded from final standings and promotion or relegation outcomes.
A distinctive feature introduced in the 2024/25 season is the dual-champion system. This format awards two separate titles within a single campaign. The winner of the regular round-robin phase is crowned "Seriemester," while the victor of the subsequent knockout stage receives the title of "Sluttspillmester." The championship phase employs a "Final Four" structure. The top two teams from the regular season earn direct entry into the semi-finals, whereas sides ranked third through sixth contest two-legged quarter-finals. These ties are decided by a Golden Set tie-breaker if necessary.
Access to the top tier is regulated through a clear promotion and relegation pathway linked to the 1. divisjon. The club finishing eighth is automatically relegated. The seventh-place team faces the runner-up from the second tier in a qualification playoff to secure the remaining spot. The winner of the lower division earns promotion, provided the club is not a reserve team. Historically, dominance has been shared among several entities. The Bergen-based combination of Nyborg VBK, Ulriken VBK, and TIF Viking holds the record for most titles. Other frequent contenders include Førde VBK and Oslo Volley/OSI. The league adopted its current sponsored name, Mizunoligaen, in 2013 following a commercial agreement with Mizuno.
