Barça Femení go into each Liga F campaign as the team every rival is trying to catch, and lately the gap has barely narrowed: eleven league titles, most of them collected in succession over the past six seasons, have made Barcelona the benchmark of Spanish women's football. The current squad carries that weight into 2025-26 already holding the Champions League, the Copa de la Reina and the Supercopa de España from the previous campaign, with a domestic and continental clean sweep the standard by which the season will be judged.

The team traces back to 1970, when it started life as Selecció Ciutat de Barcelona before going through two name changes — Peña Femenina Barcelona, then Club Femení Barcelona — well before it became FC Barcelona's official women's section in 2002. The blaugrana colours arrived earlier still, adopted in 1971, more than three decades before the club itself made the connection formal.

Domestically there is little left to prove: alongside the eleven league crowns sit twelve Copa de la Reina wins and six Supercopas. In Europe, the breakthrough came in 2021, when the club became the first Spanish women's side to complete a continental treble, and again in 2024 with a quadruple. Alexia Putellas and Aitana Bonmatí, both products of the club's own academy, went on to win the Ballon d'Or, giving the production line behind the first team as much authority as the trophy cabinet itself.

Real Madrid remain the fixture that sharpens attention beyond any other, with Atlético Madrid the other side of a rivalry that rarely troubles the league table's top spot. What still sets the club apart from its own ambitions is space: the Johan Cruyff Stadium in Sant Joan Despí holds only 6,000, and for the matches that draw a real crowd, Barcelona still has to borrow Camp Nou to fit everyone in.
