Renate Hackl gathered nine women in Linz in 1972, caught up in the enthusiasm of that year's Munich Olympics, and started a volleyball section that took half a century to turn into the dominant club in Austrian women's volleyball. For most of that time the side played under the name Steelgirls; the rebrand to Steelvolleys , with a logo built around a steel beam, only came in September 2020, and a year later the volleyball section broke away to stand as its own branch club within ASKÖ Linz-Steg.

Four Austrian League championships, in 2019, 2021, 2022 and 2023, came alongside eight Austrian Cups and a first Supercup in 2023 — a run dense enough that Linz now measures itself against UVC Holding Graz in what both sides call the Austrian derby.

Youth work has underpinned the senior success rather than trailed behind it: fifteen Austrian youth championships have come out of the academy, and the club keeps a Hall of Fame for the players who carried it through its different eras.
