Puma Women

Two volleyball groups from opposite ends of the same neighbourhood, Puistolan Urheilijat and Malmin Palloseura, put their players together in February 1989. Growth since has mostly gone in fits and starts. A single season in the SM-liiga, 1997-98, ended with five wins and an immediate drop back down, and the closest the women's team came to a return was a runners-up finish in the Supersarja in 2000 — promotion on offer, and turned down. The same happened a year later, when third place in the SM-liiga qualifying round brought another chance at the top flight and the club again said no, this time citing money.

Lower down, in the third-tier 1-sarja, PuMa kept reaching finals without winning them: beaten by Etta in 2001-02, by LPK in 2003-04, and by two different sides in the two most recent seasons. It took the club's youth setup to end the wait for a trophy. In May 2025 the under-19 side beat Oriveden Ponnistus 2-0 to take the club's first Finnish championship at any level.

Off that, in November 2025 PuMa set up a new operating company, Lentopalloseura PuMa Helsinki Oy, to carry the women's team into the Mestaruusliiga for 2026-27 — a top-division return with almost three decades gone since the last one. Matches are due to be played at Lehto Areena in Tapulikaupunki, a 350-seat hall in the same district the club took its name from, a considerable step down in capacity from the 2,000-seat Töölön Kisahalli where PuMa once played. No senior national title has followed the team yet, and the Finnish Cup run has stretched no further than a quarter-final, reached in 2022-23.
