The Finnish Women's Volleyball Championship, officially known as Lentopallon Mestaruusliiga (naiset), serves as the premier professional volleyball league in Finland. Founded in 1957 by the Finnish Volleyball Federation (Suomen Lentopalloliitto), the competition underwent a significant rebranding in 2010, shifting from its original title of Lentopallon SM-liiga to its current name. The league currently operates with ten teams, distinguishing its structure from the men's equivalent, which utilises a different match count and team size.
The competitive calendar is anchored by a rigorous regular season, referred to as the runkosarja. This phase employs a triple round-robin format, ensuring that every side faces each opponent three times. This schedule results in twenty-seven matches per team, providing a comprehensive test of endurance and consistency before the postseason begins. The intensity of this period determines qualification for the next stage, where the top eight clubs progress to the championship playoffs.
Advancement through the knockout stages requires sustained performance over extended periods. The quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals are contested as best-of-seven series, meaning a team must secure four victories to claim the title or move forward. A separate best-of-three series decides the bronze medal, offering a shorter contest for third place. The pathway to the top tier remains open through a promotion playoff called liigakarsinta. The lowest-ranked team in the Mestaruusliiga confronts the winner of the second-tier Naisten Ykkönen playoffs in a best-of-five tie. The victor of this series earns promotion, while the defeated side faces relegation.
Historical dominance has been shared among several established clubs. LP Viesti Salo and Hämeenlinnan Lentopallokerho (HPK) each hold ten titles, with Viesti Salo achieving seven consecutive wins between 2009 and 2015 and HPK securing eight straight championships from 2001 to 2008. Vaasan Vasama follows with nine titles, and Karhulan Veikot has won five. In the 2024–2025 season, Puijo Wolley claimed the crown after defeating LP Kangasala in the final series.
