Down 0-1 at half-time in the 2022 Football NSW League One Grand Final, St George City FA turned the game around against Central Coast Mariners, scoring twice to win 2-1 and earn a place in the elite NPL NSW division — the club's third promotion in six years.

The pace of that rise has been the story since the club was formed in Sydney in late 2015 under the banner of Football St George. In its first season, 2016, St George City won both the premiership and the championship of the NSW State League, going up a division as a result. It repeated the double in 2018, beating SD Raiders 2-0 in the NPL 3 NSW final to move up again. By 2024 the club was contesting an Elimination Final at NPL Men's NSW level, losing 2-1 to Blacktown City — a measure of how far it had climbed from the fourth tier in less than a decade.

Home matches are played at Penhurst Park, on King Georges Road, which holds 1,000 spectators. The club has run its academy as a pathway toward the A-League, and Hayden Matthews, who came through it before moving into Sydney FC's NPL academy, went on to represent Australia. Matches against St George FC carry the weight of the St George Derby, the closest thing the club has to a rivalry rooted in geography rather than league position; Sutherland Sharks is the other name that comes up locally.

Manny Spanoudakis has been the constant through the growth, in charge of the team from its founding season and returning to the post in 2024/25 after handing the reins to Mirko Jurilj for the years in between. Under Spanoudakis, the club that started in the fourth tier of New South Wales football has spent most of its short history moving upward.
