Throttur Reykjavik Women

Knattspyrnufélagið Þróttur in Reykjavik grew out of a football club before it had anything to do with volleyball at all: the parent body dates back to August 1949, and it was not until 1974 that a women's volleyball section took shape and entered the top flight of Icelandic play.

For three decades that meant competing without much to show for it, until 1983 brought the club's first league and cup double. The wait for a second one ran to 2004 — and once it arrived, it did not let up. Þróttur took the league title and the cup in each of the following four seasons, a run through 2007 that left the rest of the Úrvalsdeild kvenna í blaki chasing a side nobody could get past.

That team is remembered for names like Rósa Dögg Ægisdóttir and Slađana Smiljanić, and for a squad built under coaching that kept turning the club's home matches at Laugardalshöll into routine wins rather than contests. The hall itself, a multi-purpose venue built for a range of sports, gave the team a settled base through the dominant years and after them.

Since 2007 there has been no further league or cup success, and the club plays now in white and red without the pressure of holding a title. What stands from the peak years is not one number but two run together: five league championships, six domestic cups.
