Throttur Reykjavik

Þróttur Reykjavík have been champions of Iceland's top flight only once. The 1977 Úrvalsdeild title sits inside a league record that has rarely settled: the club has fallen as far as the third division twice, in 1989–90 and again in 2022, and climbed back out both times.

Þróttur was founded on 5 August 1949 in Reykjavik's Grímstaðavör district, by Halldór Sigurðsson and Eyjólfur Jónsson. The team have played in red and white stripes ever since, switching to black on the road.

A single Icelandic Cup followed, in 1981. Second-division titles came six times, the last in 1997. Þróttur have also lifted the Reykjavíkurbikar, the Reykjavik city cup, twice.

Home games are played at AVIS völlurinn, also known as Valbjarnarvöllur, which holds 2,341 people — only 341 of them seated.

Reykjavik meetings against Víkingur, Fram, ÍR, KR and Valur have long been part of the Reykjavíkurmótið, the city's own tournament.

The football side is not the club's most decorated. Þróttur's handball team had its golden era in the early 1980s, and the women's team, promoted to the top flight in 2020, finished third in the league a year later and reached the Icelandic Cup final. The volleyball team has been crowned Icelandic champion 14 times.
