In 1931, a forward who had spent six seasons in Tigre's blue and red left for River Plate for 50,000 pesos. Bernabé Ferreyra had scored at better than a goal a game since the club, founded in 1902 in Victoria on the northern edge of Buenos Aires, first gave him a shirt.

That shirt has kept its stripe through the changes: a blue jersey with a red band across the middle, settled on by the mid-1940s after early spells in a plain electric blue and, between 1911 and 1919, a vertical blue-and-red design. The club is known as El Matador, and its home since has been the Estadio José Dellagiovanna, also called the Monumental de Victoria, holding 26,282.

The club beat Boca Juniors 2-0 in the Copa de la Superliga final, Walter Montillo marshalling midfield in front of goals from Lucas Janson and Federico González. São Paulo beat Tigre in the 2012 Copa Sudamericana. Juan Marvezzi's 116 goals across 1937 to 1943 remain the most anyone has scored in a Tigre shirt.
