Klagenfurt is a Carinthian city on the Wörthersee, and since 2007 the volleyball club there has carried the lake in its name: the Wörthersee Lions, or Wörther-See-Löwen in German. The name is the official one for the men's team. It came after two earlier ones. The club began as Volley Ball Klub Klagenfurt and was later HYPO VBK.

Four people started it in 1981: Pepo Huber, Herbert Hofer, Christof Gruber and Karin Spalek, who also appears under the name Frühbauer. The club did not wait long for its first silverware. The men won the Carinthian Cup in 1982 and the women followed in 1985. A European Cup appearance came in 1999.

The players it has sent furthest went by way of the sand. Alexander Huber played indoors for the club from 1990 to 2011, and Robin Seidl from 2005 to 2011. Both then moved to beach volleyball and reached the Olympics in 2016. Behind them stands a youth system that produced Austrian champions at boys' level in 2005, and among the girls at under-11 in 2008 and under-12 in 2010. The club has no formal academy, only youth teams.

VBK Klagenfurt 2 is the club's second team, with rosters on record from the 2022/23 season. It plays in the Sportpark hall, which was completed in 2013 and holds 1,400 spectators, and it wears the club's red and blue. Every title listed above belongs to the main club or to its youth sides. The second team has none of its own yet.
