In 2006 Klagenfurt's women reached the final of the Austrian Championship, only for aon hotVolleys Wien to lift the title.

The team traces back to 1981, founded at the Volksheim Waidmannsdorf as HYPO VBK with backing from the Kärntner Landes- und Hypotheken Bank. It later competed under sponsor names, as ATSC Klagenfurt and then ATSC Kelag Klagenfurt, winning the Austrian Cup three times under those banners, in 1992, 2004 and 2007, before the club settled into the identity it carries now, the Wörthersee Lions.

Football has come in short bursts rather than sustained runs: a place in the CEV Cup in 1999, and a return nineteen years later in the CEV Challenge Cup, where Hungary's Pénzügyőr Budapest closed the tie in the second qualifying round, taking both legs 3-0.

Since 2013 the club has played at the Sportpark Halle, built as Austria's largest multifunctional sports hall and able to hold around 3,000 spectators across fixed and mobile seating. Playing in red and blue, the Wörthersee Lions compete in the AVL Women, the top division of Austrian volleyball.
