Volleyball in Brno began in the district of Židenice, where SK Židenice Brno took the court in 1945/46 and won the Czechoslovak title in its first season. The team then spent the communist era changing names with the sponsoring works or sports union: Sokol Zbrojovka, Spartak Brno ZJŠ, Zbrojovka. Between 1965 and 1971 it added five more national titles, and the eighth came in 1988/89.

After 1989 the team played as UNIS Brno and JMP Brno. The present company, Volejbal Brno, a.s., was registered on 19 January 1999. In 2011 a separate association, VK Brno, was set up to run youth teams, which supplies the club with its own players.

The men's side is the Blue and Whites in the Czech Extraliga. Their best modern finish was second place in 2015/16. They have reached the Czech Cup semi-finals but have not won the competition. Their rivals are VK Ostrava and VSC Fatra Zlín, and the games against them are called the Moravian derby.

The women, VK Šelmy Brno, have done what the men have not. They won the Czech Extraliga in 2024, and in the 2025/26 season they took the Chance Czech Cup. Both teams share Hala Kounicova, which holds about 1,000 spectators.

Of the historical players, Karel Láznička is among those the club still names first.
