Brno built its reputation on car parts and heavy machinery, and it was the Zbrojovka arms works that gave the city its first great volleyball side. Under the Zbrojovka Brno and later Spartak Brno ZJŠ banners, the club won the Czechoslovak Championship eight times, a run stretching from 1946 to 1989 that closed out with the fall of the old regime.

What plays under the Kometa name today is a different, smaller thing: SKP Kometa Brno, a civic association formed in May 1990 once the state police sports structure it had belonged to was dissolved. Its volleyball section sits in the Czech 1. liga, well below the top flight the city once dominated, and trains and plays out of Hala A Horní in the Štýřice district.

The bigger name in Brno volleyball since the 1990s has been Volejbal Brno, registered in 1999 to carry on where the old championship-winning sides left off, and it has done so under a string of sponsor names — UNIS, JMP, RWE among them. It came closest to matching that old success in 2015–16, finishing runner-up in the Extraliga, and tested itself in Europe too, losing in the first round of the CEV Challenge Cup to Steaua București.

Ondřej Boula is the name that carries furthest through that history. A setter for the club across two spells, 2013–2014 and again from 2017 to 2019, he later moved into coaching, taking charge of the women's side at VK Šelmy Brno.
