The fiercest date on the calendar is the Trattnachtal-Derby, against SV Grieskirchen, named for the valley both clubs share along the river Trattnach. Other neighbours — SV Schlüßlberg, UFC Eferding, SV Bad Schallerbach — come and go on the fixture list without ever carrying the same weight.

The team that plays that derby is not, strictly, one club. Since 2019, SV Zaunergroup Wallern has fielded a joint side with ASV St. Marienkirchen an der Polsenz, under the name SPG SV Zaunergroup Wallern/St. Marienkirchen, in the Regionalliga Nord, Austria's third tier. Each partner keeps its own board, budget and sponsors, and each still exists as a separate legal club; only the team sheets are shared, down to the reserve side, which plays in the Bezirksliga under the reversed name SPG ASV St. Marienkirchen/Wallern.

The nickname Zaunerboys comes from Manfred Zauner, the club's president and main sponsor, whose name is also on the stadium gates.

Promotion to the Regionalliga followed the 2012 Oberösterreich-Liga title, and the club's best finish there came in 2013/14, 4th place. The Oberösterreichischer Landescup has never been won, though the closest attempt came in 2022/23, when Wallern lost the final to SV Bad Schallerbach in extra time and on penalties.

Herwig Drechsel, named Player of the Century at SV Ried, closed his playing career at Wallern between 2011 and 2013. Petr Voříšek, a Czech international, followed a year later and stayed on as player-coach through 2016.

Wallern was founded on 20 June 1972, in the market town of Wallern an der Trattnach; Marienkirchen a year earlier, in 1971 — two separate village clubs long before either had reason to share a team sheet.
