Artem Stepanov gave Utrecht the lead at the interval with a 36th-minute strike, and the visitors looked comfortable for much of the first half. Excelsior pressed for an equaliser after the break, but their chances were limited by Utrecht's compact shape. The hosts finally got back into the game when Sliti found space in the box and finished coolly at the 77th minute.
And here's the thing about late goals — they tend to decide matches that looked settled until the final quarter. Utrecht played the second half a man up after the exchanges around the hour mark, and that extra energy showed when De Wit rose highest to meet a cross in the 90th minute plus two. The substitution pattern suggested both managers were looking for something different in the closing stages.

Excelsior held 56 per cent possession and registered 534 total passes compared to Utrecht's 435, but the visitors created four big chances against one, and their expected goals of 1.42 versus 0.61 reflected that. Utrecht's shots on target ratio of 50 per cent was also superior to Excelsior's 40 per cent, and they converted their efficiency into the decisive moments.
The result keeps Excelsior in sixth place on ten points after six games, while Utrecht remain in 14th with five. The hosts had lost just one of their previous five matches before this, but the draw against NEC Nijmegen and the away defeat to PSV had already shown they are not yet consistent. For Utrecht, this ends a run that has seen them win only once in six outings.
