Marco Antonio Ponce called the meeting, in the home of Marta Velez de Ramos, that put Motagua on paper in 1928. Honduras and Guatemala were arguing over a stretch of border land at the time, and the river that ran through the dispute gave the new club its name — its colours, too: a deep blue for the water, white alongside it. Ponce and Marco Antonio Rosa built the side out of players left without a team when América, Honduras Atlética and Águila all folded within the same stretch.
The nickname that stuck, Ciclón Azul, has carried the club through 20 Liga Nacional titles, the most recent taken in the 2025–26 Clausura. Two Copa Honduras wins, in 1993 and 1995, sit alongside six regional crowns in the Copa Centroamericana de Clubes, the last of them in 2018; a run to the semi-final in 2023 did not add another. Every fixture against CD Olimpia is billed as the Clásico Nacional.
Since 2011 the club has worn pink for October, a break from the dark blue kept up in support of breast cancer awareness. The badge has also travelled under other names over the decades — Las Águilas Azules, Los Mimados, Azul Profundo — though it is Ciclón Azul that supporters still shout from the terraces.
