Deportivo Cuenca Juniors

The Estadio Alejandro Serrano Aguilar has held its 16,540-seat capacity since 2015, when Azuay's sports federation recalculated the figure after a safety review trimmed the ground from the 20,000 once claimed for it. It is there that Deportivo Cuenca Juniors has spent its short life so far.

The club only took legal shape on 26 October 2023, registered with Ecuador's sports ministry under agreement MD-SSDAF-2023-0041. Unlike a youth academy formalising itself into senior football, Cuenca Juniors set up as a professional club from the outset, with its own board, even as it built out the youth ranks underneath.

The nickname settled quickly and for an unlikely reason: one of the club's founders turned up wearing a cap with a rooster on it, the others liked it, and it stuck as a nod to local tradition. Los Gallos, playing in blue, gold and black, have not had to wait long for silverware. In 2024 they went through the Azuay provincial championship unbeaten and beat Aviced Fútbol Club on penalties in the final; in 2025 they beat the same opponent again, this time 3-1, to retain the title.

That second title came with promotion attached. Cuenca Juniors finished as runners-up in the national Segunda Categoría in 2025, a result that lifted them into Serie B, Ecuador's second professional tier, under coach Leonardo Vanegas.
