Cruz Azul and Toluca played out a 3-3 draw in the Liga MX Apertura, round 10, at the Estadio Banorite on Friday evening. We had backed the hosts to win, confidence around 41 per cent, but the match refused to settle into that shape. By then the scoreline told its own story.
Nicolás Ibañez opened the scoring for Cruz Azul in the seventh minute, a sharp finish that set the tone. Toluca responded quickly, Gabriel Fernández equalised in the thirty-eighth, though Diego Barbosa was off the pitch by halftime after a booking. Two more yellows came before the break, one for Agustín Palavecino and another for Antonio Ricardo Mohamed Matijevich.
The second half turned on a penalty awarded in the fifty-second minute after a VAR check on Luan Garcia. Hélio Júnio Nunes de Castro stepped up and buried it, and Alexis Vega restored parity for Cruz Azul just four minutes later. The home side then took the lead through Vega in the seventy-eighth, but Toluca refused to let it stand.
And here's the thing — the game never truly paused. Gabriel Fernández dragged Toluca level again in the ninety-fifth minute, while both sides made a flurry of changes in the closing stages. Alexis Vega was one of the first to come off for Cruz Azul in the eighty-second, a sign that legs were fading faster than the hope of a winner.
Statistically the match was anything but one-sided. Cruz Azul had 49 per cent possession and 333 passes, while Toluca managed 51 per cent with 352. Both teams created two big chances, but the expected goals tell a slightly different tale — 1.55 for the hosts against 1.95 for the visitors, and yet the shots on target ended up level at seven apiece.
That kind of efficiency gap doesn't always translate to goals, and this was proof. Toluca now sit top of the table with 20 points from ten games, five ahead of Cruz Azul in sixth. The result ends a run of mixed form for both sides — the hosts had lost four of their last five before this, while the visitors were more inconsistent still.
