Cameroon's league table for the 1970s reads like a Canon Yaoundé roster: three CAF Champions League titles inside a decade, in 1971, 1978 and 1980, with the African Cup Winners' Cup added in 1979. No club in the country matched that run, and it was built on a goalkeeper, Thomas N'Kono, who went on to be named African Footballer of the Year twice, and a forward, Jean Manga Onguéné, who took the same award in 1980.

The club traces back to 11 November 1930. The nickname, Kpa-Kum, imitates the sound of a cannon going off, and stuck to the shirt.

Domestically the record is heavier still: ten Elite One championships, the last of them in 2002, and twelve wins in the Coupe du Cameroun. The two cups arrived in different eras of the club, the league title spread across three decades from 1970 to 2002, the domestic cup concentrated more thickly in the 1970s and 1980s.

Canon shares Stade Ahmadou Ahidjo with the rest of Yaoundé's football, a ground that holds 42,500. Among the players it produced, Marc-Vivien Foé played in European football and the Cameroon national side.

The trophies thinned after 2002, but the cannon in the name still points back to 1930.
