When Russia's teams were barred from international competition in 2022, UEFA reassigned their vacated place at the Women's Euro to Portugal, and the team that had reached its first major tournament only five years earlier found itself at a second. The route had opened in 2017, when Andreia Norton's goal sent Portugal to the Euro for the first time. Qualification for the 2023 World Cup followed the harder way, through a play-off final won 2–1 against Cameroon, and a place at the 2025 Euro came after that.
None of this existed before 1993. Portugal had fielded a women's team once already, drawing 0–0 with France in Le Mans in October 1981, but the federation shelved the project soon after. Carlos Queiroz and António Simões brought it back more than a decade later.
Fourth place in their Nations League group this year left Portugal short of the top two, with the next Euro now the target to build toward.
