Basket Flames Women

Basket Flames sit third in the win2day Basketball Damen Superliga this season, and the campaign has already produced a run to a national final: in January 2026 the team reached the Basketball Austria Cup final before losing 58-72 to BK Raiffeisen Duchess Klosterneuburg. It is the kind of season that keeps the club in the conversation at the top of Austrian women's basketball.

The club as it now exists was formed for the 2012/13 season, when Union Kuenring Flames merged with Basket Clubs Vienna Juniors. Union Kuenring carried the weight in that arrangement. Founded in 1951 by Franz Mrkvicka, it won eighteen Austrian championships between 1966 and 1985, and its men's side had its own title in 1966 before splitting away in 1975. The Flames name and much of the identity that Basket Flames plays under today trace back to that run rather than to the 2012 merger itself.

Recent history has been built more quietly: the 2022/23 Basketball Damen Zweite Liga title brought the club back into the top flight. Pia Jurhar, a member of the Austrian national team, has been the player most associated with that rise.

Home games are played in front of just 200 seats at the Sporthalle Mariahilf. The Vienna Timberwolves remain the opponent that turns a league fixture into the Wiener Derby.
