UBI Graz Women

A handful of players in Graz put together a women's basketball side under the name Union Basketball Initiative in August 2010, and within its first season the club was already playing in the Austrian Women's Basketball Bundesliga. It has stayed there ever since.

UBI Graz Women train and play at the Unionhalle on Gaußgasse. The number says something about the level the club operates at.

The team's recent record reads as a run of near misses. Since 2019 it has reached the Austrian Championship final in almost every season, and since 2018 it has done the same in the Austrian Cup, only to come up short each time against BK Duchess Klosterneuburg. Local papers have taken to calling the meetings between the two a Styrian derby, despite Klosterneuburg sitting in Lower Austria rather than Styria.

Johanna Maresch captains the side and plays forward.

What UBI Graz Women have not done, across all those finals, is win. No national championship and no cup sit in the club's history, only the record of reaching the last stage and losing it, year after year, to the same opponent.
