Bayreuth

In 1989 a team from a town in Upper Franconia won the German championship, having taken the German Cup in 1988 as well. It played then as Steiner Bayreuth and won the cup again in 1989, so the title came in the middle of a run of three trophies in two seasons.

The club as it exists today is younger. Basket Bayreuth, which had previously operated as Steiner Bayreuth and USC Olympia Bayreuth, went bankrupt, and in 1999 a successor took over under the name BBC Bayreuth. It climbed back to the top flight and won the German Cup again in 2010, the same year it took the Pro A title. It then spent 13 years in the Basketball Bundesliga (BBL). Along the way a sponsorship deal changed the name to mediBayreuth in 2013. The team reverted to BBC Bayreuth in July 2023, the year it dropped back into Pro A.

Fans call it the Oberfrankenhölle, the Franconian Hell, and the supporters' club, the Bayreuth Bats, help keep it loud. The colours are black, lime green and white. The nearest rival is Brose Bamberg, and the meetings between the two are known as the Oberfrankenderby.
