CSU Sibiu

Sibiu's basketball history has run through Cluj since the 1990s, and the club's clearest measure of itself has always been whether it can get past U-BT Cluj-Napoca when a trophy is at stake — a fixture that carries more weight in Transylvania than most league placings ever do. That rivalry framed the closest thing Sibiu has to a golden run: back-to-back Liga Națională titles in 1995 and 1999, won under a different name, since the club has traded identities — Balanța, CSU Forest, CSU Astral, CSU Petrom, CSU Atlassib — before settling on BC CSU Sibiu.

The team spent years chasing that level again. It came closest in 2018–19, finishing runner-up in the league and then winning the Romanian Cup, its first major honour in two decades. That cup run also opened the door to Europe the season before, when Sibiu made its continental debut in the FIBA Europe Cup — a short one, ending in the first qualifying round against Pardubice.

Locally the club goes by Vulturii, the Eagles, a nickname that fits a side built more on flying up the table in bursts than on sustained dominance. Blue and yellow have stayed constant through every rebrand.

Games are played at Sala Transilvania, a hall that seats 1,850 — small enough that the crowd sits close to the sideline, loud enough that visiting teams from Cluj have never found it an easy trip.
