Divizia A remains the historic name for Romania’s top basketball tier, a status it has held since the competition’s establishment in the middle of the twentieth century. While the Romanian Basketball Federation rebranded the league as the Liga Națională in 2012, the older title persists in common usage. The structure operates at Level 1 of the national pyramid, distinguishing it from the second-tier Liga I, which feeds into this premier division through a promotion tournament.

The format distinguishes itself from the adjacent football league by utilising value-based split groups rather than a simple championship or relegation playoff. Following a regular season, teams are divided into two groups based on performance. The top half enters a playoff bracket, while the lower half plays out its standings. This method manages team disparity more effectively than the single-table approach seen in the football league. Relegation affects the bottom two teams, who drop to the second division, while the top two from Liga I compete in a promotion tournament to enter the top flight.

Success in the league is dominated by a small number of clubs. U-BT Cluj-Napoca holds the current championship title and has won five consecutive titles recently. CSM Oradea and Steaua București are also regular contenders in the standings. The league’s most decorated club is Dinamo București with 22 titles, though Steaua follows closely with 21. The competition integrates into the FIBA European system, allowing qualifiers for the Basketball Champions League and FIBA Europe Cup, a structural difference from the UEFA-aligned football league.

Sponsorship arrangements have led to the title being used as part of the official branding, specifically linking the league with BCR Bank. This branded naming convention differs from the less consistent sponsorship titles found in other Romanian sports leagues. The current season features a mix of established clubs and rising teams, maintaining the competitive intensity that defines the top tier of Romanian basketball.
