«UL Eagles»
In 2012 the UL Eagles won the Irish Super League and the Irish National Cup in the same year, three years after the senior team had left the Limerick Lions Basketball Club to play under the name of the University of Limerick. The league title came again in 2013.
It began in 1999 as Burger King Limerick and became the Limerick Lions in 2004. Since then the Eagles name has been reworked: UL Sport Eagles from 2018 to 2020, Limerick Sport Eagles from 2021. Most people still say UL Eagles. The team plays in blue and white at the UL Sport Arena on the university campus, so the older name still describes where the club is based.
Relegation came a few years after the titles. The rebuilding has drawn on youth players from the Lions academy, the club the Eagles left in 2009. Their main rivals in the city are the Limerick Celtics, and the fixture between them is the Limerick derby.
The player most tied to the title years is Jason Killeen, a former captain of the Ireland national team. He played for the Eagles from 2011 to 2013, which covers both league titles, and returned to the club in 2022, once the rebuilding was under way.
