UCD Marian

UCD Marian went down to National League Division One after the 2022-23 season. They spent 2023-24 there and were promoted back for 2024-25.

That 2017-18 title ended a wait of 40 years, back to the National League win of 1978. In between came the years remembered as "Team Yoplait", 1982 to 1986. The dairy brand's sponsorship carried the club for a while, then the money ran short and the team was relegated.

The club began in 1968 with schoolboys. Pupils and past-pupils of Marian College in Ballsbridge entered a team in the Dublin Minor league and won the championship that same year. Paul Meany was among those founders, and he later became president of Basketball Ireland. The link with University College Dublin came afterwards. It made UCD the first third-level college in Ireland to attach itself to a successful basketball club and to award basketball scholarships, and it moved the team to Hall A of the UCD Sports Centre in Belfield.

Tom Hinga is remembered as the club's first paid player. That set a pattern later followed by signings such as Runako Ziegler in 2022.

The Marian have no rival that anyone has given a name to. Their Dublin derbies with Killester, DCU Saints and St. Vincent's are simply matches between neighbours.
