Panionios BC

A single Greek Cup sits on the shelf, won in 1990–91, when Panionios beat PAOK 73-70. It remains the one national trophy the basketball department has managed since it split off from the wider Panionios athletic union, itself founded in Smyrna in 1890; the ball section came together separately in 1919, three years before the Greco-Turkish War forced the whole club out of Asia Minor and into Nea Smyrni.

Between the cup and the present sit two league finals nobody in Glyfada likes to dwell on: a runners-up finish in 1986–87, lost to Aris Thessaloniki, and a run to the semi-finals of the FIBA Korać Cup on two separate occasions, in 1993–94 and again in 1998–99, without ever pushing through to a final. The club has otherwise made its name climbing back up rather than staying at the top: three second-division titles, in 1974, 1981 and 2017, and a third-division title in 2016, the year after finances forced Panionios out of the top flight entirely, ending 33 consecutive seasons among the Greek elite.

Fanis Christodoulou wore number four long enough, and meant enough to the club, that Panionios retired it; Boban Janković's number eight hangs alongside it, the only two names honoured that way at the National Athletic Center Glyfada Makis Liougas, where 3,500 can fit in for a game against AEK Athens, the derby that still means the most locally even with both sides now far from their old standing.

The financial trouble did not end with the 2015 relegation. Panionios went through it again in 2020–21, a second reminder that a club built on one cup win in more than a century has had to fight simply to keep a team on the floor.
